General Questions

What is Upcoming? Why should I use it?
Upcoming is a community for discovering and sharing events. It can help you find stuff to do, discover what your friends are doing, or let you keep private events online for your own reference. If you'd like, read more about Upcoming.
What does it cost?
Using Upcoming is free, free, free.
How do you make money?
Historically, us developers of Upcoming had done our work on this as a labor of love in our free time, because we enjoyed working on it and are passionate about web stuff. Upcoming is a strictly free service and we make money with advertising.
Will Yahoo! or its advertisers send me spam?
Absolutely not. When you signed up for Upcoming, we promised you we wouldn't e-mail you about anything unrelated to Upcoming. Nobody else has access to your e-mail information, and you won't receive any spam from Yahoo or Yahoo partners to the e-mail address associated with your Upcoming account, period. We hate spam with a vengeance.
What's the privacy policy? What will you do with my personal info?
Here's our Privacy Policy. It plainly explains what we do with your personal info.

Yahoo! IDs, Signing In and Upcoming.org Usernames

What changes when I merge?
Not much! Merging will only affect how you sign in to Upcoming. After you merge, instead of using your Upcoming username, you'll sign in with a Yahoo! ID and password. Your Upcoming screenname, buddy icon, and all settings will remain the same. And you can choose which email address you'd like us to use for notifications. You aren't required to use the Yahoo! Mail account that is included when you register for a Yahoo! account.
Do I have to have a Yahoo! account to sign up for Upcoming?
Yes. To sign up for a new Upcoming account, you'll need to use your existing Yahoo! account or register a new account.
My Upcoming username is the same as my Yahoo! ID. Could this be bad?
No. But because your Yahoo! ID and Upcoming username are completely separate entities, you'll still need to merge them.
How do I merge my Upcoming account with my Yahoo! account?

In order to merge, you'll need to sign into Upcoming with your Yahoo! ID and password, then the Upcoming username and password you'd like to associate with your Yahoo! account. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID, you can sign up for a new one at the login page (or go here to get one right now). And that's it!

Note: Before you begin, remember that after you merge your accounts, you will only use this Yahoo! ID to sign into Upcoming. You might want to check your RSS readers, calendar feeds, APIs, or other applications that might not function properly after the merge.

What if someone is using my Upcoming username as their Yahoo! ID?
It doesn't matter. Your Yahoo! ID and Upcoming username are completely separate entities. If you'd like to create a Yahoo! ID that matches your Upcoming username but find that it's unavailable, try choosing something else. We won't change your Upcoming username.
I forgot my Upcoming username and can't merge!
Sign in with an existing or new Yahoo! account, then choose the "Forgot username or password" link on the migration page. If you enter the email address you used signed up to Upcoming.org, we'll be able to send you a confirmation email to verify your account.
I've forgotten my password!

No worries. To get your Yahoo! account password, a Yahoo! ID reminder, or both, visit the Sign-in Problems page and supply some basic verification information.

If you've forgotten your old-school Upcoming password, no problem. Sign in with an existing or new Yahoo! account, then choose the "Forgot password" link on the migration page. If you enter the email address you used signed up to Upcoming.org, we'll be able to send you a confirmation email to verify your account.

Can I change my screenname?
Sorry, there is currently no way to change your Upcoming screenname... yet. We'll be offering a way to change your screenname very soon.
I'm going to delete my Yahoo! account. What happens to my Upcoming events?

Technically, nothing. But without a Yahoo! ID you will not be able to sign into Upcoming and access your events. We'll just hold onto them until you create a new Yahoo! account.

Note: Remember to store your Upcoming username and password for when you have to merge again.

What if I have two Upcoming usernames?
They are two different Upcoming accounts. Merge with one, both, or don't merge at all. Each username requires a Yahoo! account to sign in to Upcoming.
Do my Upcoming notifications change after I merge my account with Yahoo!?
No. You will receive notifications to the email address that is saved in your profile prior to the merge. We will not come knocking at your Yahoo! account. If you're interested in changing your primary contact email address, edit the details in your profile.
Yahoo! doesn't seem to "remember" me each time. Why?
Yahoo!'s playing it safe. After a certain number of hours, you're automatically signed off to protect your Yahoo! ID from misuse. You can modify this setting in your Yahoo! preferences.
If I lose access to my Yahoo! account or my account is deactivated, will I be able to sign into Upcoming?
You will need to be able to login to the Yahoo! ID and password linked to your Upcoming account in order to sign into Upcoming. If you lose access to your Yahoo! account, contact us. We may be able to help you access your Upcoming events.
Can I transfer my Upcoming account between two Yahoo! IDs?
No, not yet. But we're working on it!
How do I delete my Upcoming account?
You can delete your Upcoming profile on this page. This is permanent and cannot be undone, so please be careful.

Features

What's an "Undiscovered" event?
Basically, an Undiscovered Event is an event not added by the Upcoming community, but by our friends at Yahoo! Local. If your searches yield no Active Events, try looking in our Undiscovered section. If you find and attend an Undiscovered Event, it will be promoted to an Active Event for the rest of the community to discover with you. There's also a bonus for being the first to discover our Undiscovered: you'll be able to make changes to the event you're promoting.
How do I set my buddy icon?
We support buddy icons from our sister site, Flickr. If you have a Flickr account, go to our Change Buddy Icon and enter in your Flickr email address. (If you're a Yahoo! user, this will be your Yahoo! ID.)
How do I add a photo to an event listing?
If your photo's on Flickr, click the "Add photos" link near the comments and follow the directions to add your photo to the event. If it's not on Flickr, you can include the photo inline on your event description or in the comments with simple HTML. (Need a place to host your image? We love Flickr, but you can also try ImageShack or Photobucket.)

Event Problems

Is "self-promotional" OK?
Yes. We think it's great that you and your band are here to promote yourself, but start slowly. Adding your content gradually gives you and the Upcoming community time to discover each other. If you are the organizer, promoter, or beneficiary of an event, then it's most likely you'll be received poorly by the community for flooding Upcoming with too many at once. As we've mentioned in the Community Guidelines, it helps to be aware of your audience.
I see a duplicate event! How do I get rid of it?
The best thing to do is to use the "Report a problem" link to notify an Upcoming moderator. We'll review it and remove it.
How do I delete an event I created?
You can delete any event you created by clicking the "Delete Event" link on the event detail page, unless people have added it to their watchlists. After that point, use the "Report a problem" link to remove the event. (This is a precautionary measure to prevent troublemakers from creating popular events and later removing them, wreaking havoc with the community.)
How do I delete an event someone else created?
You can't do this directly, for obvious reasons. If nobody's attended the event yet, you can send a note to the event creator asking them to remove it. Otherwise, please use the "Report a problem" link to let us know why the event should be removed.
Someone unaffiliated with my organization posted a listing for my event. How can I correct and expand the details?
Great! Someone loved your event so much, they added it to Upcoming. The best thing to do is to click on their buddy icon to send them a note and ask them to correct it. You can also post a comment with the new information to notify others in the meantime.
Someone made a mistake on an event!
Very often, the quickest way to fix a problem is to contact the event creator by clicking their buddy icon and sending them a quick note. You can also post a comment with the new information to notify others in the meantime. If all else fails, use the "Report a problem" link to let us know what's wrong and we'll take care of it.
Why isn't the map to the event displaying?
Usually, this means we couldn't "geocode" the address -- turn a human-readable address into a geographical coordinate. For example, is the address spelled wrong or incomplete? Note that venues outside US and Canada won't have maps, but coverage will be expanding soon.

How Places Work

What happened to my metros?

Upcoming began with a system of user-generated locations called "metros" (short for metropolitan areas). If your own city, state or country didn't exist, you could create it yourself, but this resulted in a mess of duplicates and inaccuracies as the site grew. And since there was no relationship between metros, events often didn't appear where they belonged. (In one common example, events in "San Francisco" didn't appear in the "San Francisco Bay Area" metro.)

So we built out an easier way to add and discover events near you. Your metros are gone, but you won't need them! Our new Places are built on a completely new system, a massive global database used by Flickr and other properties across Yahoo. Use the Places tab to browse locations anywhere in the world, or try the search box if you're looking for somewhere specific. When you add an event, the venue will automatically appear in the right Places, from your country and state/province down to your local neighborhood.

How do I join a Place?
In the Places section, you can search or browse for various specific locations that interest you. You can join a zip code, neighborhood, town, city, county, state, or country! You should now see handy links to your favorite Places on your user page and the Places section, and all events in those favorite Places listed in the Explore Events section.
Why don't you have my hometown?
If you're browsing Places, you might be shocked to find that your sweet home town is missing from a list within the county level. We haven't forgotten it, it's just that your town doesn't have any active users, events, or venues. We recommend directly searching for it, so you can add it to your list of Places. (And then, if you want, you can go back to see that your home sweet home shows up after all!)
How do I leave a Place?
On the "My Account" profile, you can leave Places by clicking the little "x" next to every location you're no longer interested in.
