On April 19th, 2007, we discontinued the old Upcoming.org sign-in system. From now on, everyone will have to use a Yahoo! ID to sign into Upcoming. This means you'll need to merge your old Upcoming username to a Yahoo! ID -- you can choose an existing Yahoo! account or create a new one.
Well, a bunch of reasons. You wouldn't know it, but maintaining our own login system is a huge pain. About one-third of all support requests are related to lost usernames or passwords, problems with logging in, or not receiving the verification email. As we've grown, maintaining this system meant wasting valuable development and support time instead of working on fun new features.
Finally, this change opens up Upcoming to millions of Yahoo! and Flickr users who already have a Yahoo! ID. Switching to Yahoo! IDs opens up new possibilities for deeper integration with other Yahoo! properties. But most importantly, it helps free us up to work on good stuff while Upcoming continues to grow.
In order to merge, you'll need to sign in to Yahoo! with your Yahoo! ID and password. After signing in, we'll prompt you for the old Upcoming.org username and password you'd like to associate with your Yahoo! account. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID, you can sign up for a new one now. We'll walk you through the migration from there.
Note: After you merge your accounts, you will only use this Yahoo! ID to sign into Upcoming.
Not much! After you merge, instead of using your Upcoming username, you'll sign in with a Yahoo! ID and password. Your Upcoming screenname and buddy icon will remain the same. And you can choose which email address you'd like us to use for notifications, just as before. You aren't required to use the Yahoo! Mail account that's included when you register for a Yahoo! account.
No worries. To get your Yahoo! account password, a Yahoo! ID reminder, or both, visit the Sign-in Problems page and supply some basic verification information.
If you've forgotten your old-school Upcoming password, no problem. Sign in with an existing or new Yahoo! account, then choose the "Forgot password" link on the migration page. If you enter the email address you used signed up to Upcoming.org, we'll be able to send you a confirmation email to verify your account.
They're two different Upcoming accounts. Merge with one, both, or don't merge at all. But each username will require its own Yahoo! account to sign in to Upcoming.
